Matthew is our Group Scout Leader, our members know him as "Chief". Matthew has been a member of the Scout Movement since the age of 6, and joined our Scout Group in 2014.
When he isn't volunteering, Matthew works for London North Eastern Railway.
Sophie is our Scout Leader, she is passionate about volunteering and has been a valued member of our Scout Group since 2021. Sophie ensures that our Scouts enjoy a range of exciting activities in a safe environment.
When she isn't Scouting, Sophie works for Aviva in the centre of York.
Ed is our Cub Scout Leader, although our Cubs know him as "Shere Khan". Ed has been involved in Scouting for several years as a volunteer, both with our Group in York and elsewhere.
In his spare time away from Scouting, Ed is a member of HM Armed Forces.
Ed is our Beaver Scout Leader, our Beavers know him as "Wolf". Ed joined us in 2018 and we quickly threw him in at the deep end! He took on the challenge of establishing Strensall's first Beaver Colony in over 3 decades; a great success story for our Group.
As well as balancing family life with volunteering, Ed works in Finance for the University of York.
Our Assistant Leaders are essential to making our Group run, they come from a variety of backgrounds and professions and offer us a varying amount of their spare time. Everyone has a skill they can bring to Scouting, and we appreciate all the time our Assistant Leaders give to our Scout Group.
Our Young Leaders are between 14 and 18 years of age, they may have come from within the Group and want to continue their Scouting journey. Our Young Leaders gain valuable skills and provide a lot of support for our adult volunteers. They have access to the Young Leader training scheme, and reduced-cost access to the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme.
Our Scout Group was established in 1991 as a Cub Scouts section, for 8 to 10 year olds, meeting at what was the Robert Wilkinson Primary School on West End in Strensall village. Strensall Cub Pack proved a great success, with many young people coming to experience fun and adventure in a safe environment.
In 2015 we took the brave step to open a Scouts section for 10 to 14 year olds. We approached this with great trepidation and uncertainty, opening the Scout Troop with an initial number of 10 young people. Scouts grew from strength to strength, as word spread around the village and Cubs moved up as they reached the age of 10. Then, in September 2019, we took another step into the unknown and opened a Beaver Scouts section for 6 to 8 year olds. This had been a long-held ambition of our Scout Group, as we faced a great demand from families in Strensall to provide a Beaver Scout Colony for this younger age group.
Our Sections usually meet at the Robert Wilkinson Primary Academy in Strensall on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
We are also currently in the process of becoming a Royal British Legion affiliated Scout Group, building our links with the proud military history of Strensall village.
